One of the most important things I have learned from shooting thousands of macro photographs is that you can often use things that you already have in your own home, and this works for lighting as well. If you are looking for the very best field lighting option out there, you cannot go wrong with the Nikon R1C1 macro flash. It does have TTL and has a ton of power (guide number is 60m), but costs much less that camera brand speedlights. Remember that you get to see the results of your settings before taking the picture. Even plugged in, the amount of light emitted by these sources is far less than what can be achieved with a flash. By the time I was finished it topped out at one hour and forty minutes! You may have to arrange your camera and subject parallel to your light source to get some great side light. Don't have to rest the flash several times to get the right intensity and as Steve says you can see their effect before you snap the shot. For still subjects, you may find that the tools you already own will work fine. One way to compensate for this is to use a tripod and shoot at a slower shutter speed, which often works well in macro if your subjects are still. They arent cheap, but as a standby macro light in the field, they are worth the investment. Lets wrap it up there.
