5, 12 and 16. I was off and on my way to the golf course at 0805. Our Partners | After playing in some summer remaining heat in Huelva and Algarve, the climate here north of Lisbon was quite different, a little humid and chilly by the end of the day when summer light started to fade away.
It was welcome to see heather sprinkled through the rough adding colour to the course. Our main criticism is that the course just wasnt that much fun. 0 people found this review helpful Praia Del Rey & West Cliffs.
Very good condition. 2 people found this review helpful A good drive and short iron is all that is needed and the second hole is then a short downhill par 3. Even the par 3s will fully test you. The contoured greens, and the fairways were immaculate. Many golfers choose the wrong tee box for their skills => impact on pace of playin sum though absolutely worth playing the course, something special. but it also has some high moments. Was this review helpful? Front 9 is very tight and will need some good drives just to get to the fairway, the back 9 is stunning with the 10th & 18th as stand out holes. Both the 6th and 7th are par 5s coming in at over 500 yards. It is easy to walk the course, the slowest round we played was with buggies, walking is perfectly fine, there are some longish walks between some holes but nothing overly obtuse. Nothing short of stunning in all aspects. There are also two or three greens that are completely overdone (the short par four with mogul dead centre of the green being the worst offender, but not the only one.). The Dye name is quite famous in Golf Course Design and Architecture but not Cinthia!! All in all course I would highly recommend to most golfers, the general aesthetic reminded me of some of the UK's more historic heathland courses but with some added grandeur with the coast in view and various elevations. You are basically hitting over scrubland, a dune (with the next tees on) and more scrubland to a green you cant see. 11 reviews Help | Every hole is interesting, the greens are close to perfection. Overall a disappointing experience. The course is wonderfully maintained and the even if the ocean does not come into play you can see it from every hole (and some holes have an incredible view). It is worth noting that our group of 6 included a decent spectrum of golfers with respectable handicaps (0,3,4,7,10,17). A big but though for me: I just do not think on the fairway or lost ball on every hole is golf.
Definitely coming back ! Rated High | I was a big fan. Respond to above review site. Review Rank | The Green complexes also add to a fulfilling experience, with approaches to tiered well protected greens playing prominently but also fairly.
and a lot of elevation changes. Its clear from when you arrive at the clubhouse that no expense has been spared in the development of this facility. The contrasts of the white sand, the emerald green of fairways, the ocean and native areas is just breathtaking. The 10th hole sits in front of the clubhouse and the range and is just a beautiful looking hole.

Great value at 55 euro and Formosa lovely pair when played with Praia dEl Rey down the road. As four 12 handicappers we got round in 4 hrs 40. I hate myself for writing that. Respond to above review If you add that the nature around the courses is gorgeous and that the green fee is very reasonable at 85, it definitely worth the drive from Lisbon (approx.

which in time will offer residential opportunities and a future 5-star hotel. And this one being her first course I have played the impression is quite good! Earlier in the day I had played Praia dEl Rey and the ball seemed to go on for ever there. Arrival and club house are majestic and you should play here to enjoy the rough nature rather sooner than later, as the course will be surrounded by colony of contemporary villas soon. The higher handicappers simply hated it because it was far too difficult from the '55' tees (we should have listened to the starter). Buggies back by 5pm and not great customer service. I enjoyed every moment og it. The staff were great and very helpful, the facilities top notch, and the views quite amazing. 18th is a signature hole. So basically if was 40 for the night in a really nice room. This course underwent a true transformation. On my way! I doubt it's a course for 20+ handicappers. There is plenty of good golf around this area. Even in the peak months in May and September you can get a double room for around 120 so I would recommend considering this option seriously. from
12th faces the bay and green seems to be in an infinity end and 16th has a blind shot to a fantastic green. 1st 9 done 24 points . back 9 different story tricky dog legs ,blind shots and lots of sand and cabbage!!! It is a great enhancement to the Praia DEl Rey course, but very different by art and nature, much wilder and rougher than the older one. Played here end of April. This means the course plays 5,500 meters (or 6,000 yards) from them. My one gripe, was the greens themselves. Lovely, Simon Kaye

Nevertheless, the great design of the holes and the great views of the ocean made it an unforgettable experience anyway (without looking at the score!). I think it would be fair to say that the back 9 feels a little tighter off the tee than the front 9. I played it on the early morning of April 20, with the wind blowing at more than 50km per hour, which made it an almost impossible challenge. The US architect, Cynthia Dye, has designed this course - sculpted out of the dunes near the Atlantic Coast in Portugal. We played the course on an overcast and occasionally misty day so did not get the best out of any views. ", The terrain at West Cliffs is amazing.
18th is a great finale, elevated tee shot over native area which looks a lot more tight than it really is and then approach (mid iron) to a green protected by a pond and the ocean on the back during last lights of the day highlight of the round! The grass was actually lovely to putt on. The reason he suggested these tees became apparent as the round went on. Highly challenging.
However, I would also suggest you spend some time in Lisbon (an hour away) as well, and Oitavos Dunes is very easy to get to from there. Offering sweeping views of the Atlantic,
Just for the case, Respond to above review The conditioning was uniformly excellent. *Signature Hole - the 18th , a great par 4. So only 9 of 10 points, Charbonnier Alain
At West Cliffs the greens are composed of bentgrass and the effect was it really felt you could attack putts which pulled up a little still too.
West Cliffs was designed by the world renowned golf course designer Cynthia Dye (Dye Designs). See other reviews from Colin. 17th has a tremendous tee shot over a dune where the more you cut the shorter the approach but a misshit will be high numbers. West Cliffs is well known as one of the best new courses in continental Europe. Couse is layed out over a massive area so buggy is recommended. All in all: hard to rate fairly. Sand and cabbage everywhere ! Many thanks to Marisa for her flexibility, kindness and efficiency. See other reviews from Gary Ross.

As usual, you just need to be wise and select the correct set of tee boxes where to play from. You may argue the extreme demand off the tee with usually native areas on both sides of the fairways but they are quite wide so if wind is not lateral and strong it is playable, even for higher handicaps. I think in that respect the layout is a real challenge but you can overcome it with use of a buggy. He asked me my handicap (12) and suggested I play the 55 tees.

Was this review helpful? Among the other features not found often on modern courses you should be not surprised by a huge sand hill with bushes in the middle of the 14th fairway, just in front of the green. West Cliffs definitely has some flaws - the long walks, the long carries - . 4 people found this review helpful
0 people found this review helpful Join | You are aware in these early holes of the development going on as houses are getting built and you arent really away from it all yet but dont worry, that will come. Both my wife and I had very good rounds on West Cliffs, although we played well, I have given it a Hard rating as I can imagine it could be a bit of a nightmare if the Atlantic winds came into play. This is golf on a big budget. 2022-06-12
Was this review helpful? Very enjoyable combination.
Quite expensive but worth it. If you are just doing one of the courses then you can do it in a day trip from Lisbon but there is plenty of golf around here so if you are thinking of staying for a couple of nights then you should consider staying at the onsite Marriott hotel. Starting by the set of par 3s 2nd elevated shot and short iron to a small green, where missing anywhere will be big problems. There are many holes to enjoy, the back 9 had my preference, and there are some strong par 5s on holes 6 & 7.
I am a big fan of playing the right tees but this is probably a little shorter than I would normally consider - I would have normally gone off of the 59s. 1 hour and ). As others have mentioned it is very challenging. Some insane blind holes and very tricky dog legs. 0 people found this review helpful From previous reviews (and the name of the course) we thought that some of the holes might be along the cliffs with spectacular views but that was not the case. The back tee on the par 3 16th is one of the very oddest holes I have ever seen on a golf course. Make sure you get the right tees, Ben Walker
Lovely club house and excellent staff. The course sits in the heart of a new resort,
I can't think of any tee boxes we stood on and weren't in awe of the views (coastal and inland), bright colours amongst the flora and mature trees.

This is a really interesting course, managed to play 45 holes here over 2 days in March, partially in 35mph winds. However losing a ball short of the fairway must happen a lot. Maybe as a handicap of 6 I was simply not good enough to play this course. Great course in superb condition. Praia DEl Rey which lies close to the West Cliffs
Just returned from a trip playing a number of courses near Lisbon, West Cliffs was the highest ranked of them all and it was excellent overall but BEWARE.
9 hours to play nine holes is a typo? You have to drive well to carry over the scrub/bushes so take the marshalls advice and chose the right tee to play off. Great course and great value for money - Clubhouse is very nice too. Tom Lawlor
Log In | Since its opening some years ago I wanted to visit this one and the chance came on a road trip done this past week where we drove a lot more kms than usual to play just 3 courses but it was really worth to add also San Lorenzo and Vale do Lobo Ocean to the venues I have been lucky to visit.

Half way we complained only for the marshall to blame weather, people anything but their ability to push people along. Greens were a little slow. West Hills was voted the best new course in 2018 but it remains a tough challenging test of golf especially off the white tees.I am only imagine the golf that one has to play off the black tees, which are further back. Terms & Conditions. Nice club house and facilities. Unfortunately for our group it didnt live up to the billing.
Respond to above review The par 3 5th at West Ciffs is a lovely Redan hole. Some argue this last one could be better showing the green, leave it like it is and make it a tribute to Prestwick! 2022-04-18
This privileged and exclusive location will mesmerize and challenge you to tame the forces of nature and perfect your game. The West Cliffs opted for numerical tees instead of colors, so we have 5 options for the starting tees 63; 59,51; 51; 47 indicative of the distance of the golf course. 17 and 18 in particular presented a great finish where you needed to hit very good shots to score well.

There are some really long walks between greens and the next tee (and I do mean really long.) See other reviews from Simon Glastonbury, West Cliffs is an outstanding golf course. I was fortunate enough to play here this week. The course has the two loops of 9 coming back to the Club House which is always good if you want to play only 9, for double start for Tournaments, etc. In wind this is truly impossible and v difficult even with no wind. All very civilised and nothing to be too scared of! Rolling sand dunes interspersed with coastal vegetation, while the pine groves overlook the ocean from above. This is not a golf course review its a whinge about service and does not deserve to be published. In good condition and quick, we found they seldom read true and the punishments for missing were very severe. Greens are carpeted with 100% Pinehurst bentgrass, the fairways are a mix of Perrenial Ryegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass and Creeping Red Fescue whilst the rough contains a blend of different fescue grasses. And that is what exists on every single hole here. The other thing we didnt like were the long walks between greens and tees. The official West Cliffs website actually links you to the portugalgolfbooking.com website who handle all the bookings. No buggies available, its a long course, with long distances between holes so you need a buggy or pretty fit.

Plan your next golf break with Golfbreaks.com. The greens are sloped and challenging as well, maybe a little bit too soft but before judging this we need to know what the demands for the maintenance team are and the timeline they are working on: I would not complain as speed was quite good, they held the good shots ok and the entire course was in very good shape.
On the plus side there were some really interesting (albeit challenging) holes. When I say long I mean around 200 yards. Please change date.
Estrada do Rio Cortio 4 The view from first tee was breathtaking and rather scary! Our Services | Played this course? What is difficult about the golf course is, that the course does not forgive mistakes (statement of the starter: only 5% of the balls are found in the rough (trust him)). 1 person found this review helpful
Enjoy this major golfing challenge. Visually intimidating and there must be a lot of balls hit from there never to be found again. The problem is if you are short then you are dead in very very thick vegetation. You can book very easily online. See other reviews from Mike Brooks. Jon Atcherley
holes 17 and 18. Is seems as if it was always here. Things start to get a little harder on the 6th. Partly very spectacular golf holes. Be prepared to be paired up at busy time. As I say I loved the greens and there is very little rough to talk about. | Post Review There are some rally testing holes especially the par 5s and their indices are not generous. Modern clubhouse is huge and popped by semi-friendly staff (in particular, should you arrive early for the first tee time in the morning). Once you will arrive to the 5th tee, reasonable par 3, you might be shaken: you have to play (forced carry) on the green which is nested on top of high sand hill just of the size of the green, with steep slopes on all sides full of bunkers and thorny bushes. Nature can be challenging and rewarding, intense and relaxing, unpredictable and surprising. With that, 5 and half easily. Peak months here are March-May and September-Novermber where you can expect to pay 83, dropping to 54 off-peak. 5 or 6 world-class holes at least, perhaps more. I paid 90 for a double room which included breakfast.
The only other consideration would be that this isnt going to give you the height of Portugese nightlife but its very convenient for the golf and you could always taxi from here into nearby Obidos for a bit more authentic fun.
Respond to above review Contrary to much of what is said on here: it is walkable, but you had better be fit, and I found the service perfectly fine, if unobtrusive. It's essential to keep on the cultivated stuff as a visit into the scrubland will almost inevitably mean a lost ball. Most fairways are not narrow but if you miss them its a lost ball every time. Was this review helpful? Brooks Cruise ship landed at 0700. Slightly further afield is the sandbelt-like Troia Golf Club, so it is possible to spend a few days travelling around the Lisbon area playing some really pleasant golf in what are likely to be lovely conditions. There is not respite with a long carry required at the 8th.
I played this course couple of times under varying wind conditions, and I always enjoyed it. Quite tough as most balls off the fairways are lost, there are also some long carries. It was my second 18 holes of the day and I could barely walk by the end of it. Fantastic Golf course. Its nice to have a downhill tee shot and if you are going take on the green in 2 it needs a long iron to get there - a great finishing hole for matchplay.

Imaculate course and very challenging. Rated Low, The golf courses reviews are the personal opinions of members of Golfshake who completed a review after playing the course. From Tee to Green, definitely one of the funner course I have played (even though it was hard and made me want to cry at one point, but this was more operator error than the course). Choose 3 rounds From: Praia Del Rey and West Cliffs Golf Links. This course does not deserve a 2nd besy course Portugal rating. The varied landscape and natural terrain was maintained undisturbed as possible to create an unique and world class 18-hole seaside links golf course alongside the silver coast. But do not consider only that, you have a serious test of golf to face when standing on the first tee.
Anyway, enough moaning. We had to wait too Long, cause a few guys Were very slow. West Cliffs is an outstanding venue and the course is an absolute treat to play. Slow round, no buggies, poor service, course design great, course condition poor, 5 and half hour round and staff who don't care. In a place of unspoiled nature, were the Wild West Europe meets the immensity of the Atlantic Ocean, a new golf experience managed by Praia D'el Rey is born. The par 3 5th is a lovely Redan, the green slopes from front right to back left with a bunker protecting it deeply on the left hand side. The 7th is a particular challenge with a Pine Valley style Hells Half Acre to cross before a tough uphill shot to a well protected green. I pretty much walk every golf course I play but I should have made an exception here. Best course, Ian Sampson
Our first 9 holes took 9 hours and not a marshall in site. I cannot begin to imagine how anyone of say 15 handicap would ever get fun out of playing here. Club house very welcoming, food fantastic, well worth a visit. coastal vegetation. This really does represent great value at any time of the year.

Castle Stuart, Kingsbarns, Dumbarnie. Its located very close to Royal Obidos and Praia dEl Rey and is already proving a very popular spot.
West Cliffs is not a links course, but you will enjoy sea vistas on many holes as well as sand and wind will play significant role here on almost every day. I have seen reviews were it's pointed out that it was too easy losing balls into the rough, and I agree, however, there is more than enough fairway and first cut allowed to you before the rough comes into play.

The course layout is the result of a long term study of the terrains conditions and characteristics to preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of the site. The par 5s are quite good as well with a very special touch: 7th has a waste area crossing the fairway like 7th at Pine Valley and knowing how good Dyes are I am sure Cynthia took the idea from Crumps Masterpiece.

Its as interesting as it is immaculate start to finish (it is however extremely difficult - do not even attempt a medal score round here unless youve got youre A+ game with you). The course never really gets close to the coast (you can only see the cliffs in the distance) which was a bit of a surprise but this is sandy ground nonetheless and the ball runs well. Respond to above review Pretty much every hole is stunning in its own right and there are lots of interesting features such as sand dunes in the middle of fairways and an old-school redan green. I think this is a design issue if truth be told, it will impact some players' enjoyment of their round and definitely slows things down.
